Privacy Policy for MovieCollector
MovieCollector is an Android app for cataloguing a personal physical movie collection. This policy explains what the app does with data.
Summary
Your collection stays on your device. There is no account, and no server operated by the developer. The developer cannot see your collection. The app does send barcodes and film titles to third-party lookup services, and shows ads, both described below.
Data stored on your device
The app stores the following locally, in its private app storage:
- Films you add: barcode, title, year, genres, cast, director, runtime, age rating, overview, poster, your rating, notes, tags, watched status and date, favourite flag, loan details (borrower name and date) and any photo you take.
- App settings, including UI language, metadata language, theme and any API keys you enter. Keys are held in Android's encrypted storage.
This data is not transmitted to the developer. It is removed when you uninstall the app or clear its data. It may be included in Android Auto Backup, a Google operating-system feature that copies app data to your own Google account.
Data sent to third parties
Film lookup. When you scan a barcode or search for a title, that barcode or title is sent to the services below so the app can identify the film. No other information about you is included.
| Service | Purpose | Policy |
|---|---|---|
| UPCitemdb | Barcode lookup | upcitemdb.com |
| Go-UPC | Barcode lookup (optional) | go-upc.com |
| TMDB | Film metadata and posters | themoviedb.org |
| OMDb | Film metadata (optional) | omdbapi.com |
Advertising. The app shows a banner advert supplied by Google AdMob. AdMob may collect and process data including your device's advertising ID, IP address and general device information in order to serve and measure ads. This processing is carried out by Google, not by the developer, and is governed by Google's policies:
If you are in the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom or Switzerland, the app asks for your advertising consent choices before requesting ads, and passes those choices to Google. You can change them at any time from the app's privacy options. You can also reset or delete your advertising ID in Android's settings (Settings → Privacy → Ads).
Google Drive backup (optional, off by default). If you
enable cloud backup, you sign in with Google and the app writes a backup of your
collection to your own Google Drive. The app uses the restricted
drive.file scope, which grants access only to files this app itself
creates. It cannot read anything else in your Drive, and the developer has no
access to your Drive or to the backup. Turn the feature off and delete the
backup file to stop this.
Permissions
- Camera — used only to scan barcodes and to take a photo of a disc if you choose to. Camera images are processed on your device; the app does not upload them.
- Photos / media — only if you pick an existing image for a film.
- Internet — film lookup, poster downloads, ads and Drive backup.
Analytics
The app contains no analytics or crash-reporting SDK. The developer receives no usage statistics.
Children
MovieCollector is not directed at children and is not intended for users under 13. The developer does not knowingly collect data from children.
Your rights
Because the developer holds no personal data about you, there is no developer-held record to access, correct or delete. To remove everything the app has stored, uninstall it or clear its data. For data held by Google (advertising, Drive, Android Backup), use your Google account controls at myaccount.google.com.
Under the GDPR, ad personalisation is based on your consent, which you can withdraw at any time through the app's privacy options.
Changes
This policy may be updated. Material changes will be reflected by a new “last updated” date, and the current version is always available at this address.
